When someone searches "electrician near me," Google shows a map with three businesses on top — the "map pack." Those three get the bulk of the calls. Everyone below is fighting for scraps. So the whole game is getting into that top three. Here's what decides it.
How Google decides who ranks
Three things, in plain terms: relevance (does your business match what they searched?), distance (how close are you?), and prominence (how established and well-reviewed do you look?). You can't change distance, but relevance and prominence are both things you build.
Lever 1: A complete Google Business Profile
This is the foundation. Pick the most accurate primary category, add every service you offer, set real hours, list the towns you serve, and add real photos. A fully completed profile beats a half-empty one every time — and most of your competitors have half-empty ones.
Lever 2: Reviews — the biggest mover
Volume, rating, recency, and your replies all count. A steady drip of new reviews signals "this business is active and chosen." Ask every customer, right after the job, with a one-tap link. Respond to every review, good or bad. This is the single most powerful lever most owners ignore.
Lever 3: Consistent information everywhere
Your exact business name, address, and phone number should match across Google, your website, Facebook, and any directory you're on. Inconsistency confuses Google and costs you ranking. Fix the mismatches once and it pays off quietly for years.
Lever 4: A website with local pages
Your profile and your website work together. A fast website with a page for each service and each town you serve tells Google exactly what you do and where — which feeds your map ranking. No website, or a thin one, leaves prominence on the table.
What you can't shortcut
Don't buy reviews and don't use a fake address to look closer to a city — Google catches both and the penalty (a suspended listing) is far worse than the problem. There's no trick here, just the basics done consistently while most competitors don't bother.
Ranking on Maps is mostly consistency — done every week, not once.
